On April 15, 1469, Guru Nanak Dev Ji, the first Guru and founder of the Sikh Panth, was born in Rai-Bhai-Di Talwandi, now known as Nankana Sahib, which is located in modern-day Pakistan. Since his early years, Guru Nanak Ji had always been a spiritual person. He showed so many people the right way and guided them away from superstition and hypocrisy.

To honour this auspicious day, gurdwaras are decorated with flowers and lights. Two days prior to Gurpurab, the Guru Granth Sahib (holy book of the Sikhs) Akhand Paath often kicks off in the gurdwaras. One day prior to the Gurpurab, the Panj Payaras, or the five beloved Sikhs, conduct the Nagar kirtan while carrying the Nishan Sahib. Groups of singers perform hymns in Guru Nanak Dev Ji's honour. Gatka teams perform Gatka (a traditional combat technique tied to Sikhism) and conduct fictitious conflicts using their own everyday weapons.

The Prabhat Feris is held in the morning on Guru Nanak Jayanti. The Gurdwaras are where the Prabhat Feris start, and Kirtan is performed all around the city. During the Amrit Vela, or early morning, at 4 or 5 a.m., Gurudwaras conduct Asa-Di-Var, or morning hymns. Gurdwaras host langars on this auspicious day, where everyone is invited for a full meal. This langar is hosted by volunteers. To enjoy the langar and welcome one another with Gurpurab, people sit in rows.

In certain gurudwaras, the kirtan diwan keeps going long after the recital of Rehires Sahib and even after the evening Ardaas. At 1.20 p.m. (the actual time of Guru Nanak Dev Ji's birth), the throng chants Gurbani in honour of him, and the celebration lasts until about 2 p.m. The anniversary of Guru Nanak Dev Ji's birth is widely observed in New Delhi, Punjab, and Haryana, as well as by numerous Sides. Guru Nanak Jayanti has been declared a national holiday by the Indian government.
